Why do self portraits invariably look like a murderer's gallery? Could it be because of the concentration which goes into studying a face whilst trying to translate it in to the chosen medium?
Or is it the fact that the artist has carte blanche to be as critical and cruel as he or she feels able?
Or is it just that artists are all a bunch of unbalanced rogues ...?
